Total Home Performance
What is Home Performance?
Home performance is the belief that buildings can and should be made safe, comfortable, durable and energy efficient. Putting performance into practice requires a whole-house perspective. Having a certified contractor measure, calculate and analyze a building allows them to better understand the way your specific structure works and operates in order to recommend the best way to improve it without offsetting the balance of how it affects you.
Nothing but praise for your installation - D. Adkison, Bowling Green, KY
Ask an insulation contractor, an HVAC technician and a window salesperson the best way to warm up a cold room and you might get three different answers. But a building-performance contractor takes a whole-house perspective to assess the problem's causes and propose the most effective solution. Understanding the "house as a system" also allows building-performance contractors to solve problems like chimney backdrafting that arise from interactions between the building's shell and its mechanical systems.
Installers were very friendly, professional and knowledgeable - W. Harrell, Bowling Green, KY
Building scientists use a diagnostic approach to problem solving. Experience and observation, coupled with pressure diagnostics, infrared imaging and combustion analysis, allow them to diagnose and correct the most challenging building-performance problems.
I love the new windows and door - S. Pike, Bowling Green, KY
The difference between an average house and a high-performance house often comes down to a contractor's willingness to "sweat the small stuff" the customer never sees, like air sealing, insulation and ductwork.
Great job, love the new doors and windows - B. Finkbone, Alvaton, KY
The core concept is an emphasis on measurable results from performance testing. Performance testing also assures the customer that they have a safe, comfortable, durable and efficient building when the work is completed.
"If you don't test, you don't know."

Why an Energy Evaluation?
A home energy evaluation, also known as a home energy audit, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time.

*Initial Meeting with Customer. Prior to starting each audit, Total Home Performance sits down and gets to know you and your home. No one else understands your home and what's going on inside of it as well as you. The auditor will keep your concerns in mind as he or she conducts the energy-efficiency audit.
*Attic and Insulation Review. Due to the stack effect, the condition of the attic is the most influential part of the home. Stack effect occurs when hot air moves upward toward the ceiling, then escapes due to poor or insufficient insulation and air sealing. Simple measures can be put in place to combat this expensive inefficiency.
*Interior Examination. The interior examination of the home starts with accessing simple measures that can be taken that immediately impact energy bills, such as replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs and caulking windows and doors. Other measures, such as proper bathroom ventilation and appliance condition, are assessed during the house walkthrough.
*Blower Door Test. A blower door is a powerful fan that mounts into the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings. These tests determine the air infiltration rate of a building.
*Basement and Crawl Space Review. Statistically, 30 percent of first-floor air comes from the crawl space, mostly due to the stack effect discussed in the attic review. It is very important for a home and its occupants to have a well-maintained crawl space. Measures such as a vapor barrier and air sealing cut down on the potential for many contaminants, like mold, to enter the living space.
